Canon Printers

Canon, leader in imaging technology, is pleased to announce the smallest Bubble Jet flatbed multifunctional printer, scanner and copier with direct photo print capability - the SmartBase MPC200 Photo.

Designed for home and small business use, this new model in the SmartBase range produces crisp copies and prints and can also print full-colour photos directly from a digital camera memory card, without the need for a PC. This is Canon's first fully featured All-In-One device to offer direct photo printing and allows users to print photographs quickly and easily at home or in the workplace.

Photo quality printing

The SmartBase MPC200 Photo delivers outstanding photo prints. Its high print resolution of 2400 x 1200 dpi ensures high-contrast prints and a broad colour range, even on plain paper. The SmartBase MPC200 Photo delivers a fast 14 ppm in monochrome and 10 ppm in colour. It further distinguishes itself from other models in the SmartBase line up with its borderless printing and copying capabilities in both A4 and 4"x6" formats.

Photo functions

By simply inserting their digital camera's memory card (using an adapter) into the SmartBase MPC200 Photo, users can print their photos directly from the card without the need for a computer. The MPC200 Photo is supplied with a PCMCIA Compact Flash" card adapter but is also compatible with SmartMedia", SD card" and Sony Memory Stick® providing the appropriate adapter is used.

Additionally adjusting the photo settings is easy with the user friendly control panel, enabling users to directly print out A4 or 4" × 6" high-contrast borderless photos on any paper type.

The Canon SmartBase MPC200 Photo comes with various software packages to guarantee excellent quality photos. The innovative Exif Print standard improves the way digital cameras and printers work together. It allows images to be printed exactly as the photographer intended at the time they took the picture and ensures optimised high quality output every time. Furthermore, Canon's Easy Photo Print software means users can quickly and easily select and edit images for perfect printed results

The SmartBase MPC 200 Photo uses Canon's Vivid Photo technology. This enhances photos by using the printer's capabilities to go beyond the colour limits of a PC monitor and therefore achieve more precise results.

Photo-quality copying and scanning

As a digital colour copier, the Canon SmartBase MPC200 Photo has all the features normally associated with a dedicated high-quality machine with a copy resolution of 600 x 600 dpi monochrome and 1200 x 1200 dpi colour. At 14 pages per minute in monochrome, and 10 ppm in colour, the SmartBase MPC 200 Photo delivers fast copying speeds. This machine also boasts a 25-400% zoom function as well as other convenient features such as 2-on-1 copying and a 'Fit to Page' option.

The SmartBase MPC200 Photo is also a high-performance scanner, giving resolutions of 600 x 1200 dpi optical, up to 9600 dpi enhanced. While colour reproduction is ensured by 36-bit colour depth, the 256 shades of grey scale give clear monochrome scans. By using the Multi-Photo scan function, separate images that were scanned in a single take will be saved as separate files.

Quality

The combination of high-resolution printing capability and Advanced MicroFine Droplet TechnologyTM means that the SmartBase MPC200 Photo consistently provides crisp, high-contrast results, even on plain paper. Canon's Advanced MicroFine Droplet Technology gives the most accurate dot placement, sharpness and density possible so that print quality is always consistently high. Twenty five years light fastness* is guaranteed when using Canon's Photo Paper Pro (PR 101), meaning bright colours, crisp blacks and sharp-looking documents with no ink-bleed or fading.

Surprisingly compact, the high performance SmartBase MPC 200 Photo measures less than 40 x 55 cm. With an attractively styled metallic lid and the universal operation panel, this user-friendly All-in-One is ideal for creative households or small businesses where space is at a premium and high quality can not be compromised.

The USB Full Speed interface ensures full compatibility with Windows® 98, ME, 2000 and XP. The SmartBase MPC200 Photo can be installed within minutes, thanks to the multifunctional concept; just a single cable and one computer driver is required.

"This is a really exciting new product for us. It builds on the strength of our new SmartBase range and is the first time Canon has offered a great looking, compact multifunctional that can also print outstanding quality photos directly from a digital camera's memory card. We believe that with such high quality, high speed multifunctionality, the MPC200 Photo will be an extremely popular model," says Malcolm Hills, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging in the UK .

Absolutely Training

Absolutely Training, a leading online e-learning provider, has launched a free training course to help businesses prepare for the smokefree legislation.

From 1st July 2007 it will be against the law to smoke in virtually all substantially enclosed public places and workplaces. Employers will need to implement appropriate procedures to ensure that employees and others refrain from smoking and are aware of the new smokefree law.

Rachel Dineley, a partner in the employment group at national law firm, Beachcroft LLP, said “Many employers have already taken steps to address the forthcoming smoking ban. Those who have not yet done so should be putting in place appropriate policies, in consultation with staff and their representatives. They need to consider how they will strike the balance between encouragement not to smoke and penalties for those who repeatedly break the rules “
The training course is designed to raise awareness of the new smokefree legislation and ensure employees know what their responsibilities are. Available online, managers and employees benefit from training that is

- highly relevant and practical
- offers clear explanation and guidance
- quick and convenient
- can be used as an ongoing reference tool

The course can be delivered as off-the-shelf or customised to include as little as a company logo or detailed information such as organisational smokefree polices.

Paul Fegan, Chief Executive of Absolutely Training said, “I am pleased that Absolutely Training have been able to develop this free course, which I believe will make it easier for employers to explain the implications of the legislation and the practical impact this will have on an employee's right to smoke at work. This is a potentially contentious change, and by explaining it carefully it should be easier to manage the transition to a smoke free work place."

The course compliments the existing suite of employment law courses which Absolutely Training offer in conjunction Beachcroft LLP.

Mortgages Shropshire

The Council of Mortgage Lenders welcomes today's Bank of England MPC decision to hold mortgage rates. Even so, The Council of Mortgage Lenders urges borrowers who will be coming to the end of fixed-rate deals in 2007 or 2008 to plan ahead for the higher payments they will almost certainly face.

Using data from its regulated mortgage survey, The Council of Mortgage Lenders estimates that about 1.3 million borrowers took out fixed-rate mortgages in 2005, and a further 1.5 million in 2006. Most, but not all, of these mortgages would have been fixed for two years.

The majority of these borrowers will face increases of between 0.75% and 1.5% on their mortgage rates.

The Council of Mortgage Lenders calculates that the average two-year fixed-rate mortgage borrower coming to the end of their fix later this year originally had a mortgage of around £114,000. On a repayment mortgage taken out at 4.6% (the average two-year fixed rate mortgage at the interest rate trough of September 2005), this would result in a rise of about £102 a month (from £640 to £742), for a borrower whose new mortgage rate is 1.5% higher. On an interest-only basis the rise is more dramatic, at £143 - although the monthly payment remains much lower in absolute terms than for a repayment borrower, rising from £437 to £580. Most borrowers did not fix at such low rates, and so will not see their payments rise by as much as this.

We largely expect that borrowers will be able to absorb the higher payments. Many people's earnings will have risen since they took out the mortgage, while some may take advantage of the financial leeway offered by switching temporarily to interest-only mortgages. Most borrowers facing higher payments will also have accumumulated a significant cushion of housing equity by virtue of house price inflation since they took out their mortgage.

Michael Coogan, The Council of Mortgage Lenders Director-General, commented:

"While today's decision not to raise mortgage rates is welcome, there is no cause for complacency. More than two million borrowers over the next year and a half will reach the end of fixed-rate deals, and will face the prospect of higher mortgage payments.

"For most people, the scale of the increase will be manageable. But it makes sense for borrowers whose fixed-rates will end soon to start planning ahead now, and to recognise that their monthly costs will be higher in the future. Anyone who thinks they may face financial difficulties should talk to their lender at an early stage to see what steps can be taken to improve their situation."
